Thanks to a new campaign through Sound Food, a branch of Sustainable Bainbridge, Bainbridge Island residents now have an easy way to find restaurants and retailers, as well as farms, that offer locally-sourced food. Businesses displaying the Island Food Circle decal are consistent and significant supporters of regional food and farming.
“Bainbridge Islanders care about where their food comes from and how it was grown; now they have a quick way to find businesses that share those values,” said Carolyn Goodwin, Sound Food Program Manager.
The Island Food Circle project was created in partnership with area farmers who nominate member businesses based on their purchasing histories. To be admitted into the program, each member must have a track record of making local food a significant part of their product offerings.
“Sound Food asked local farmers to identify which businesses were regularly buying from us,” said Kevin Block, owner of Sol Farm. “It’s great to have an opportunity to recognize Island businesses that make the effort to buy locally-grown food.
Participating businesses are listed on the Sound Food website in the Island Food Circle Guide, which lists sources for every category of food, including eggs, fish, meat, and dairy, as well as restaurants, farms, and retail outlets that offer local food.
Sound Food also is distributing brochures throughout the Island that list “Where to Eat” and “Where to Buy” local food.
